Prospect Jonathan Diaz Joins Lexington Legends

The Lexington Legends of the MLB-partnered Atlantic League have made a significant offseason acquisition, signing former Boston Red Sox minor league catcher Jonathan Diaz. The move follows Diaz’s outstanding performance at Empire Instructs, the premier professional baseball showcase held at Terry Park Sports Complex in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Diaz, a 27-year-old catcher, demonstrated his excellent defensive abilities and emerging offensive power during the three-week Empire Instructs program. Known for his ability to manage a pitching staff and control the running game, Diaz also impressed scouts with his improved hitting approach and ability to drive the ball to all fields. These attributes made him a sought-after player, and the Legends secured his signature.

“Jonathan is a leader on and off the field,” said the Lexington Legends’ manager. “His experience with the Red Sox organization and the strides he’s made at Empire Instructs highlight his commitment to excelling in all aspects of the game. We’re thrilled to have him join our team and expect him to be a key contributor.”

Diaz began his professional career in the Red Sox organization, where he quickly earned a reputation as a reliable backstop. Despite his strong defensive tools, injuries and limited opportunities at the plate slowed his progression. Determined to prove his value, Diaz invested in refining his offensive skills, leading to his participation in Empire Instructs.

The Empire Instructs program is designed to provide free agents an opportunity to train and compete in front of professional scouts and coaches, offering players a platform to showcase their talent and reignite their careers. With limited spots available, the program draws top-tier talent eager to make an impression, and Diaz’s success story is a testament to its impact.

“Empire Instructs gave me a platform to display my skills and show that I still have what it takes to compete at a high level,” Diaz said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to begin this new chapter with the Legends. I’m ready to contribute and help the team win.”

The Legends, who compete in the Atlantic League—a partner league of Major League Baseball—are preparing for a competitive 2025 season. Diaz’s addition strengthens their catching corps and brings a veteran presence to the clubhouse.
